Privacy policy
This page describes how the site actually works, not an ideal. It is updated when the behaviour changes.
What we place on your device
Three technical cookies, all necessary for voting to work, and no advertising or third-party analytics cookie:
- Device identifier — a random number, unrelated to your identity, which lets us apply the one-free-voice-per-day limit. Without it, the limit could not exist. Duration: 400 days.
- Time offset — the difference between your time and universal time, so your daily voice renews at midnight where you are. Duration: one year.
- Chosen country — set only if you switch country space, so we do not ask you again on every visit. Duration: one year.
If you create an account, a session cookie is added for the duration of your visit. Your browser also remembers your answer to the country suggestion, locally, without sending it to us.
What we record when you vote
A vote records: the contender chosen, the timestamp, the device identifier above, the country code the vote is cast from, and a fingerprint of the IP address. That fingerprint is computed with a secret key and is not reversible: we never store the address itself and cannot reconstruct it. It serves only to spot abnormal bursts of votes, without which a voting site is emptied of its meaning overnight.
Detailed votes are purged after thirteen months. Only aggregate totals, which no longer concern anyone in particular, are kept beyond that — which is what allows a match to have a history.
If you create an account
An account is optional: voting does not require one. It becomes necessary to buy voices, to keep a streak across devices or to propose a match. We then ask for an e-mail address and nothing else — no password: you sign in through a single-use link sent by e-mail. The address is used to sign you in and to send you information about your purchases. It is not sold, shared or used for marketing.
Payments
Payments are handled by a specialist provider. Card details never pass through our servers and we never have access to them: we keep only the fact that a purchase took place, its amount and the number of voices credited, which accounting and invoicing require.
Advertising
There is currently no advertising space on this site and no ad network connected to it. Were advertising to be introduced in future, this page would be updated before it went live and a consent tool would be shown, letting you accept or refuse the cookies concerned.
Your rights
You may request access to your data, its correction or its erasure by writing to voteroyale@stban.com. Include the e-mail address of your account if you have one. For votes cast without an account, we have no way of linking them to a person: that is the flip side of the pseudonymisation described above, and it means we cannot retrieve them on request.
